Down Time; Blog Maintenance; Updates

I can’t believe that it’s been weeks since my last update! In my defense, I took some much needed down time after a whirlwind three presentations at back-to-back SQL Saturdays. Don’t get me wrong: I absolutely love connecting with the greater community at these events, but they can be tiring!

That said, I’ve not been entirely down and out over the past few weeks. First, I wanted to share that I’m helping Steve Simon with the Oracle-SQL Server Virtual Chapter. Mainly I’m working on finding new speakers, so if you (or someone you know) have both Oracle and SQL Server experience in your background, I’d love to hear from you! Even if you aren’t sure, send me an email and we can have a more in depth conversation about it.

Second, I’ve got some exciting news coming up next week that I can’t wait to share with you. Project that’s been a few weeks (months!) in the making. All in good time.

Finally, with the sad news of Reader’s imminent demise, I’m preemptively jumping away from Feedburner as my RSS subscription manager. I loved Reader. I love Feedburner. But I don’t think Feedburner is long for this world, and exhibits the same signs as Reader. Doesn’t make revenue. Hasn’t been updated in years.

The most important part is that to stay subscribed to my blog, you’ll need to update your RSS reader to my new feed address, http://mattvelic.com/feed/. I hope that you find enough value here that you will. Thank you, and I am sorry if I lose some of you in this move. Hopefully we’ll connect (digitally) again soon.

Blog Maintenance

Hey folks.

I wanted to write a quick note. Since I’ve hit a nice stopping point in the Virtual Lab series, I’ve decided it’s time to take a small breather and to perform some maintenance on this blog. I’ve got a not-so-well-kept secret: I’m infected. This blog has been hacked somewhere, and my base level cleanup wasn’t good enough to nip it in the bud.

Specifically, I’m suffering from the Pharma Hack. Basically, if you come directly to my blog, you’ll see my wonderful content. But if you Google certain pages (such as my About page), you’ll see some sexy spam instead. Clicking on it, you’ll come to my regular content. The hack is pretty slick since it isn’t modifying content… but it’s incredibly difficult to track down and cleanup.

The plan is to install WordPress fresh, database and all. This is already complete as of tonight. Part of the reason behind this post is to ensure that I haven’t broken my RSS feed for my wonderful subscribers. I heart you guys and gals. But it’s also a little warning to say that I’m juggling around some of my subdomains and downloads, and if something is broken right now, don’t worry about it as I’m fixing it up and letting the digital dust settle.

Thanks again for sticking with me over these past few years, and I hope we have many more together!

Still Kicking

This isn’t a real post so much as it’s a note to say that I’ve been enjoying a few (quiet) days off after finishing the 2012 campaign season. I can’t even begin to describe the wonderful feelings I experienced last week… it was a fantastic, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I am so glad I took.

That said, I’ll have a technical post in a few days to be sure. And I am revving up my job search to full speed, so if you’ve got any tips or know of any wonderful companies that are hiring, please send them along to me. Much appreciated.

Reason 6: I Met Obama

Last week, I shared my top five reasons for why I love my job for #meme15. Reason six hadn’t happened yet. But it was so fraking mind–blowing that I’m including it now.

Matt Velic meeting President Barack Obama at work

“Thank you, Mr. President.”

That’s me. And yes, the angle isn’t the best, but you had better believe that’s President Obama. I love the anticipation of the hand shake. I don’t love that I wore jeans… (Even if they are All–American Levi’s 501s!) Regardless, I will never forget this moment for as long as I live.
