Only Rockstars Need Apply

A job posting came across my desk recently. Entitled ROCKSTAR DBA NEEDED, the listing went on to state (emphasis mine):

Our client needs a rock star – not just a DBA. Supporting the development and maintenance of critical applications is the day job. Being a part of a critical government agency that support schools, thinking fast on your feet and being a fire fighter is what makes this job unique and exciting.

News flash: thinking fast on your feet and being a fire fighter is not a unique quality to this DBA position. Though being able to do so correctly does make one a rock star. Anyway, figured you would all enjoy that small anecdote.

  1. Does it come with the pay of a rockstar?

  2. Unstated: “Arranging things so that fire fighting is unnecessary would be an asset.”

    • Honestly, I didn’t even get as far as reading between the lines. Often times teams, departments, even organizations get so deep into fire fighting mode that they know no other way to operate. I’ve been there myself: when I proposed ways to change things for the better, they were turned down for excuses of time and money… any reason to make sure we stayed busy and with the appearance of being indispensible. You know, rather than innovative and remarkable.
